How to Pay for Sober Living in San Antonio

Sober living is rent, not treatment. That changes who pays for it. Here's how men in San Antonio cover it.

What sober living costs

Sober living homes in San Antonio charge monthly or weekly rent for a bed. What's included varies a lot from house to house, so compare what you get, not just the number.

At Merit, a bed is $850 a month. That includes all utilities, Wi-Fi, a furnished bed and dresser, lockable storage, linens, laundry, a full kitchen and a house manager. Residents buy their own food. You can pay weekly or monthly.

Why insurance won't pay the rent

Health insurance, Medicare and Medicaid pay for care: detox, treatment, IOP, counseling and medication. A sober living home provides housing and structure, not clinical care, so insurance doesn't cover the rent.

That doesn't make insurance useless while you live here. It may still cover your IOP, your counselor and your prescriptions. Keep those appointments. They're part of the work.

The ways men actually pay

A job

Most residents pay from their own wages. Structured homes, Merit included, expect you to have work, school, volunteer hours or IOP within your first 30 days. A steady paycheck is also one of the clearest signs of progress.

SSDI or SSI

If you receive disability benefits, they can go toward rent. Ask the house to line your due date up with the day your deposit lands, so you're never short in between.

VA benefits

Veterans can use disability compensation or other VA income toward rent. The VA also runs housing and recovery programs; talk to your VA case manager about what applies to you.

Family

Many families cover the first month or two while a man finds work. That's a good use of help, as long as the plan is for him to take over the rent.

Programs and vouchers

Some treatment programs, courts and community organizations help with first-month rent or recovery housing. Rules differ, and some programs only pay homes with specific certifications. Ask your case manager or program what they cover before you count on it.

Questions to ask any house about money

  • What does rent include, and what costs extra?
  • What's due to move in?
  • Can I pay weekly? Can I match my due date to my benefits?
  • What happens if I'm late?
